What I wish I knew -Catherine Shea ’23

Growing up, I was a secret agent. As the youngest of three, I watched as all of my friends panicked with each new life change we faced. I smiled with confidence as they were frantic entering middle school, high school, and going to prom, knowing well that I had the inside scoop on it all. I took mental notes of my siblings’ experiences, preparing myself for when it was my turn. I learned all the ropes, what mistakes to avoid, what could help me along the way, and more.

Taylor Hallabuk ’20, Strategic Communication POE, Free spirit navigating life through Kesha songs and spontaneity

One of my favorite Juniata Communication professors, Grace Fala, always says, “Knowing what you don’t know is wisdom. Not knowing what you don’t know is ignorance.” So, I like to think that I was a pretty wise eighteen-year-old beginning my college career. I knew that I didn’t know how to study, I knew I had poor time management skills, and I most definitely knew that on my first day of freshman year at Arcadia University, that I had chosen the wrong college for me. “College is where you will spend the best years of your life.” Growing up, I heard these words all of the time from adults. Throughout high school, I grew anxious to move away and be able to live out these next wonderful years of my life. However, there was one issue. I had no clue where I wanted to go to college! As a result of my uncertainty, I applied to 13 different institutions ranging large and small, rural and urban. Needless to say, the task of finding the perfect school for me was quite daunting. The college admissions process can be a scary time. Trying to figure out where you are going to spend the next four years of your life can prove to be a daunting task, but the process is different for everyone. Some people know from their first year of high school where they want to go, and others, like myself, will take a little bit longer to make that decision. In retrospect, looking back at my application process, there is something that I wish I knew. I was researching so many different schools with different programs in different states and it got quite overwhelming. Juniata was one of those schools, but I had no clue that it would be the college I would pick. Looking back, I wish that I knew that I didn’t have to worry; that I would pick the right school, and for me, that school was Juniata College.

What I wish I knew – (Cruz)ilious Contreras-Amezcua ’23

Time is crucial in college, and anywhere really. In college, you’re given a pile of work to complete in a span of one to two days and probably a number of meetings too. On top of that, you have to make sure that you’re taking care of your needs (that means no holding your bladder until you finish that last essay sentence!). Things like making sure you’re eating meals, practicing good hygiene, even making your living space feel a little more like home. This can be especially difficult for first-year students to navigate if it’s their first time in an environment like this. Let’s be honest, it can all overwhelm you pretty fast.
