Reflecting on changes from COVID-19

The day we got the email I was incredibly upset. I wouldn’t be returning to the new place I called home. I wouldn’t be able to go to my classes. I wouldn’t be able see my friends. This pandemic has impact all of us, and the biggest way that it has changed my life has been in regards to how it has affected school.
Juniata, along with pretty much every other college in the country, has shut down its campus and moved to online learning. Not being able to physically be in a classroom has not been easy. I find myself getting far more distracted during class at home, but perhaps the hardest part has been not being able to see my friends. I have met so many wonderful people at Juniata who I have become so close to, and it was definitely an adjustment to get used to not seeing them every day. Thankfully, we live in the age of Snapchat and Facebook and my friends are never more than a text or Zoom call away.

It’s been over a month since spring break ended, and the reality for Juniata athletes became classes in pajamas as they co-enrolled at in Zoom University. Parents’ home cooked meals have replaced our sweet Baker and Eagles Landing meals. Lovable pets and our cute siblings may be replacing our team bonding and connections for now, but we shall not forget the Oak shaped holes in our hearts that our early departure from Juniata left us with. Maybe this sounds like an ideal college experience for you? Studying from home may sound like paradise for some, but for others it quickly became clear that not all aspects of life at Juniata College are as fruitful when recreated at home. Being at home has made me miss the appeal of living at college. Part of what makes us Juniatians is that we are adaptable and we press on, and that’s exactly what the Juniata Athletics program is at the forefront doing.

Welcome to our first Dear Alfie post! For those not familiar, Dear Alfie is an opportunity for prospective students to ask a current Juniata student questions about life here. Consider it a way to get Juniata info straight from the source.
My name is Stephanie Letourneau and I’m a senior at Juniata. We have received so many great questions and I’m excited to answer them! I have to thank all my friends from campus for helping me answer these questions. I traveled near and far, soared through the sky, and can now report back. Phew!
So, let’s get started:

“Who is Juniata College?” This is a question asked often at mock trial tournaments that Juniata College mock trial team attends. The American Mock Trial Association’s representative said it best at this year’s regionals: “Juniata College is the team that’s shocking the mock trial community.” Juniata College’s team has only been a program for two years and is already nationally ranked and competes across the country.
Juniata’s mock trial team is ranked third in Pennsylvania and second among private colleges in Pennsylvania. They also hold the highest rank of any of their peers, including Bucknell, Elizabethtown, Franklin and Marshall, Susquehanna, Dickinson, and Allegheny College. The team has received numerous individual awards. Growing up, I was a secret agent. As the youngest of three, I watched as all of my friends panicked with each new life change we faced. I smiled with confidence as they were frantic entering middle school, high school, and going to prom, knowing well that I had the inside scoop on it all. I took mental notes of my siblings’ experiences, preparing myself for when it was my turn. I learned all the ropes, what mistakes to avoid, what could help me along the way, and more.
