My Juniata Athletics Experience

-Maggie Peck ’21, Biology POE, Pre-Dentistry

When I made the decision to continue my education at Juniata College, I also decided to end my career in sports. I had played sports since the fourth grade and continued to play soccer, softball, and basketball throughout my high school years. However, in college I wanted to focus solely on academics and keep my options open to other extracurricular activities. I thought about taking up dance, as I had when I was younger, or finding a new passion. During my freshman year, I stayed true to this plan. I delved into my schoolwork and found some new hobbies. I took up some intramural sports.

What I wish I knew – Taylor Hallabuk ’20

Taylor Hallabuk ’20, Strategic Communication POE, Free spirit navigating life through Kesha songs and spontaneity

One of my favorite Juniata Communication professors, Grace Fala, always says, “Knowing what you don’t know is wisdom. Not knowing what you don’t know is ignorance.” So, I like to think that I was a pretty wise eighteen-year-old beginning my college career. I knew that I didn’t know how to study, I knew I had poor time management skills, and I most definitely knew that on my first day of freshman year at Arcadia University, that I had chosen the wrong college for me. Some might call that foolish, but ask Grace Fala – she’ll tell you it’s wisdom.

The Dreaded First Year 15

I’m proud to admit that I have lost my First Year 15. Much of the hearsay about college has made it seem almost inevitable that parents will foot the bill, but also by the student in the form of baggy eyes and a little extra “chub” around the edges. In my first year of college, I gained over 30 pounds. In my second year of college, I made it a goal to get back the “pep in my step” so I can continue to compete at the varsity level. Now as a junior, I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in my life. In college, having a healthy lifestyle can be tough because living alone is a first for many undergrads. Balancing a healthy lifestyle and enjoying your newfound independence can be a struggle for any new college student!

From the West Coast to a Winter Campus – Snow what?

There’s one aspect of returning to Juniata after a long Winter break which never fails to catch me by surprise. It seems a lot of my more localized peers here at Juniata take this winter phenomena for granted, but coming from the dry West Coast, it’s part of what makes Juniata a special place to me. Getting to walk in, look at, and even getting covered by snow when some falls out of a tree are just a few reasons of why it’s so wonderful to be back here at school.

Mr. Juniata: An Insider’s Perspective

Every year, starting all the way back in 1997, judges from throughout the school are randomly selected to evaluate the chosen male champions entertaining the Juniata population in a charity fund raiser and mock beauty pageant dubbed Mr. Juniata. Each class is represented by two contestants who are evaluated based on their exemplification of what I concluded are the principal qualities one must have in order to be awarded the prestigious title of “Mr. Juniata”:

Talent, Dress, and Schmooze.

To further my understanding of this innocuous JC ritual, I managed to infiltrate the pageant, enlisting as one of the champions for the junior class.
