Defending the Arch – Storming the Arch 2019
The Hellbenders gathered in front of Cloister for “the Storming” in a mass of black clothes, and excitedly prepared to tackle our classmates. Our beloved veterans Catnip, Onyx, Simba, Bambi, Chambers, Brady, and Tigress have been training us in tackling, wing lines and pulsating squats, (most importantly) and we have become more than a team already. As a new rugby player, Storming of the Arch feels like the starting point of an exciting season of unknown moments of empowerment. As we chanted our perfect and intense chants before the Storming, I felt the sense of our collective power as a whole. It was a little nerve wracking lining up before the other freshmen stormed, which is ironic because we were the ones on defense.

The first semester of your senior year of high school is one characterized by a period of strife and stress also known as the college application process. College applications, commonly full of looming deadlines and standardized testing, are a main point of stress in what would otherwise be a wind down year for students who are nearing the end of their four year stretch of public schooling. If I could tell my 17 year old self something about the college admission process, I would tell myself not to take the application personally, and to focus my efforts on finding the best matched school for me.
(more…)Being a Juniata Athlete
Juniata is the perfect place to be a student-athlete! I have been on the cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams here for all four of my years in college. Being an athlete here has helped me develop as a learner and as a runner. At JC, around 35% of the student body participates in a DIII Varsity sport. We have so many different teams from basketball to volleyball to track and cross country, which is what I do! There are lots of cool activities here to celebrate student-athletes and our accomplishments like DIII week and our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Additionally, each individual teams have their own silly traditions.

Friday, February 22nd, 8:00 AM. I groggily turn off my alarm and stumble out of bed. My first thought: “I did not get enough sleep last night.” I got myself ready and headed down to Ellis Hall to meet a student who would take me to Bear Paw Lodge, about five minutes down the road from campus. I was tired, but optimistic. I was honored that my fellow students had invited me to be part of this exclusive retreat, and I wasn’t about to sleep through it. My girlfriend greeted me with coffee and kisses, and I said goodbye to her. When I arrived at the lodge, I was in awe. Who knew a beautiful modern log cabin with enough sleeping room for 26 would be hiding in the woods of Huntingdon, PA?

If you’ve been on campus lately, you’ve definitely noticed the swarm of tents that suddenly appeared on the Quad. No, it wasn’t an evil camping magician that sought vengeance on Juniata students. No, it wasn’t Laughing Bush (our outdoors club) practicing for their next outing. It was actually a Juniata tradition called – yep! you guessed it! – tenting!
