Debunked: 3 Myths about Individualized POEs
If you know anything about Juniata, you know that we don’t have majors the way other colleges might. Sure, you can come in with a Designated Program of Emphasis (POE) like English or Business and have similar requirements to majors at other schools. But you could also write an Individualized POE of “Writing and Society” or “Marketing Strategies.”
There are many myths about the process of individualizing your POE and about graduating with an individualized POE. I’m going to debunk three of them and explain how I individualized my own POE.
Life on the Video Production Team
Having a job at Juniata as a student employee has created many different stories for me. I have worked for the soccer team collecting balls on the sidelines during the game, I have packed backpacks with food for students at the local elementary school, and I had assumed the Video Production Team (VPT) would be a similar experience. I would learn and develop skills that I can use in the future. Better yet, hone ones I didn’t even know I had. However, no campus job could have prepared me for what the VPT had in store.
One of the activities we take part in the VPT is called monthlies. Every monthly meeting we are split into groups and assigned a project, for example, our most recent is to make a spooky video because it is October. We work on these projects as groups, planning filming, acting, etc., and the final product is shared with the team in our next meeting. Out of all parts of the process, the most enjoyable aspect for me is working with my team members, creating and watching our ideas come to life. Sometimes they will throw in a requirement, such as including a Dutch angle, in our project to help us get more practice and gain more experience. These are often challenging, but they lead us to find new and imaginative ways to incorporate them into our projects.

As a senior, my time as a Juniata College student is quickly coming to an end. As I prepare for my next steps in life, I wish to reflect on all that Juniata has given me.
Firstly, I have received a comprehensive, quality education. When searching for a college, I was looking for an academically focused institution. As an aspiring dentist, I wanted to go somewhere that would prepare me for professional school. Through my visits at Juniata, I felt assured that this was the right place to continue my education. I knew that I would be challenged intellectually while having opportunities to explore my own curiosities and interests. My experience has exceeded all of my expectations. The faculty members at Juniata have expressed their genuine interest in my success, which has allowed me to thrive in this educational environment. I feel confident and exceptionally prepared moving forward, and hope to find the same cohesive, supportive environment in dental school.

After having the chance to observe my fellow Juniata students for the past three years, my key finding has been that we tend to be creatures of habit. We eat at the same tables in Baker meal-to-meal, we do the same activities day-to-day, and some of us even head to the gym or to the library at the same time each day.
This year, a global pandemic has forced many of us who are habitual beings into new territory; and we’re all coping differently. With that, I introduce to you the Juniata College COVID-19 student. While some of us may share coping mechanisms, I’ve noticed that many students have gravitated, either by choice or not, to one of these five categories.
