The Gambian Art Coalition

I went into my sophomore year at Juniata with a full schedule. Three jobs, two internships, and a full load of credits. Never in a million years did I think I would have the time or the ability to co-found a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) as an undergrad.

The NGO I cofounded with two of my great friends, Evelyn McCammon and Sarah Borgardt, is called The Gambian Art Coalition. It was an idea brought to us by Professor Nagengast in the Politics department. He’s been travelling to The Gambia for the past 15 years and has made many great friends amongst the Gambians.

On the Ins and Outs of Outdoor Education

On Monday, April 1st no prank could prevent the return of beloved Juniata alum Zachary Adams. The 2017 graduate returned to campus to talk to students about his recent experiences working in the field of environmental education. I was very excited for the opportunity to speak to Zach because I also want to pursue environmental education as a bird guide. Before the talk, some of the upperclassmen from the wildlife society hosted Zach for a meet and greet at their house, just off-campus. I was eager to attend! I got to spend the better part of an hour talking to Zach about his time as a student, his career, and his life while also socializing with my fellow wildlifers. To top it all off, we ate pizza from Domino’s!

The Infamous HOBO Hike

The HOBO Hike is a rite of passage for all business students at Juniata.  Everyone on campus knows about it, but only a select few have really experienced it.  It’s a mystical and cryptic field trip that you’ll immediately hear fellow Juniatians talking about, but they don’t reveal what exactly it is.  To start, let’s break down what HOBO is; the actual name of the course is Behavioral Analysis of Organizations.  However, it was originally called something like Human Behavior in Organizations.  The professor at the time decided HBO was already taken, so he threw in the “O” to separate it from the TV channel.  And so, the class was dubbed HOBO and it has remained that way ever since.

It’s not about what you do, it’s about who you are.

Juniata’s motto, “Think about who you are”, has caused me to have at least three existential crises in the last few months. I don’t know who I am yet. I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.

For a long time, I pictured myself working at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in their Education department. I’ve been thinking about working in Vessel Operations at a cruise company. Then I got to school and thought I could see myself being a fluff journalist writing articles about big cows and quizzes to find out what Disney Princess you are based off of the food you get at Sheetz.

Being a Juniata Athlete

Juniata is the perfect place to be a student-athlete! I have been on the cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams here for all four of my years in college. Being an athlete here has helped me develop as a learner and as a runner. At JC, around 35% of the student body participates in a DIII Varsity sport. We have so many different teams from basketball to volleyball to track and cross country, which is what I do! There are lots of cool activities here to celebrate student-athletes and our accomplishments like DIII week and our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Additionally, each individual teams have their own silly traditions.
