How Juniata is thriving during the pandemic
How is it possible that at Juniata, despite CoVID restrictions, I’m allowed to compete in the annual Bailey Oratorical speech contest in person? I get to eat food at Baker celebrating Mardi Gras at a table with four of my friends? Juniata students are in the fortunate position of having found a new normal during the CoVid19 public health crisis while keeping our on-campus students’ test positivity rate– our rate of infection –just around 1%. Through the extraordinary performance by our school, faculty, and most importantly, our students, we’ve been able to enjoy what many other colleges cannot at this time.
Of course, if your school is like most high schools or colleges across the U.S., these privileges may seem unbelievable for you. Dining, sports, being with friends? The option for in-person classes that maintain the quality of education that has been more familiar and effective than SOME online classes have been for many? How is it possible?

I wish I knew what I needed to say.
I wish I knew how to start a paper about myself.
I wish I knew how to write without being cheesy.
I wish I knew what kind of person I would become.
I wish I knew how my identity would shift into something entirely new.
I wish I knew that I would become a better friend, daughter, sister.
I wish I knew that I would meet some of the people that would change me the most.
I wish I knew that it was okay to mess up and not be 100% certain in everything.
I wish I knew myself in high school to tell her everything will be okay.
I wish I knew that Juniata would make me who I wanted to be all along.
There are so many things that I wish I knew when I began my college search. Being the first kid in my family to go to college on top of being an intense over-thinker made these years filled with lots of crying, spreadsheets, and trying to rationalize a million different factors I didn’t even know how to begin to comprehend everything. You always dream about going to college, but you never realize that those same dreams lead to some of the most intense headaches. Getting sucked into the tornado that is choosing the “perfect college for you” is a force that leaves your head spinning and you craving the solace of solid ground and certainty once again.

As a Juniata campus tour guide, I’ve often been asked to reflect on my own admissions process.
“What made Juniata stand out?”
“What made me choose Juniata?”
I’ve been indecisive my whole life. Questions like “What should we have for dinner tonight?” always stressed me out. It’s not that I think questions like this are particularly difficult to answer, but without enough information to make a distinct pro/con list—or worse, when the pros and cons are evenly balanced—I’d rather not make the final decision.

2,684 miles away from here, tucked deep into the heart of the Pacific Northwest lies the incredible city of Portland, Oregon. Home to delicious food, incredible opportunity, and breathtaking views, it can be hard to think a city girl like me ended up finding her home in a small town like Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. But I did, and I could not be happier.

When in the power of the bored, time can be dangerous. I spent the last three weeks visiting every single lawn on Juniata’s campus (as well as a few in the neighborhood) and ranked them on a score from one to 100. The video that was put out on YouTube and IGTV, was but a mere summary yet entertaining dose of silliness. On my own personal Instagram @danyell_00, I plan on releasing the bloopers for that video as I managed to cut out over two hours of me rambling in front of a green screen and some bits were just too good to not to show.
However, today I bring to you the true culmination of my bizarre gardening analysis. Here is a spreadsheet of 259-ish lawns with their pros and cons, along with my ranking out of a score of 100. If you have any opinions that differ with mine, I hope know that this uneditable spreadsheet will forever hold a wrong opinion that will linger in your subconscious for days.
Well, I’ll let you explore for yourselves. If you really don’t have time, I’d suggest reading only the colored ones but I promise you that some of the best commentaries are the special ones hidden in the rows and rows of endless words. Ciao!
