Summer in January – My Short-Term Study Abroad Experience in Chile

The seasons are predictable. Winter turns to spring––usually slower than we hope. Spring then turns to summer, which turns to autumn and before we know it…winter comes again. This year, however, I broke this cycle. This year, summer came in January. Well, at least for me and 15 other Juniata students. This was no anomaly or freak incident of nature, but rather a short-term abroad trip to Chile.

My Two Worlds – Reflecting on Fall Break

Going home for the first time after being gone for two months is a weird experience to say the least. I was of course ecstatic to go home, see family and old friends, sleep in my own bed, and most importantly see my dog. Although, I couldn’t help but feel slightly conflicted when I got there. I found myself wanting to walk around campus, or go to Baker with friends. I even caught myself instinctively grabbing my dorm room key when I walked out of my house. Home is home, but Juniata is becoming my new home as well. It took me a minute to get accustomed to being home again, reverting back to an old schedule I’d had for so long. What I wish I knew – Juliana Shugar ’23

The college admissions process can be a scary time. Trying to figure out where you are going to spend the next four years of your life can prove to be a daunting task, but the process is different for everyone. Some people know from their first year of high school where they want to go, and others, like myself, will take a little bit longer to make that decision. In retrospect, looking back at my application process, there is something that I wish I knew. I was researching so many different schools with different programs in different states and it got quite overwhelming. Juniata was one of those schools, but I had no clue that it would be the college I would pick. Looking back, I wish that I knew that I didn’t have to worry; that I would pick the right school, and for me, that school was Juniata College.

My Summer in Yorkshire

This summer I was excited to be the only Juniata student attending the Leeds International Summer School (LISS) at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Two planes, two trains, one bus, and a 10-minute Uber ride, and finally I was at Uni. During ice breakers (yes, they happen everywhere), I realized less than a tenth of the program consisted of Americans.

What I wish I knew – (Cruz)ilious Contreras-Amezcua ’23

Time is crucial in college, and anywhere really. In college, you’re given a pile of work to complete in a span of one to two days and probably a number of meetings too. On top of that, you have to make sure that you’re taking care of your needs (that means no holding your bladder until you finish that last essay sentence!). Things like making sure you’re eating meals, practicing good hygiene, even making your living space feel a little more like home. This can be especially difficult for first-year students to navigate if it’s their first time in an environment like this. Let’s be honest, it can all overwhelm you pretty fast.
